Brazil’s far-right president Zaich Bolsonaro will meet today with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a day after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid a Russia-West crisis over Ukraine.
Bolsonaro, who has seen his popularity plummet inside the country and has been isolated in the diplomatic arena, expressed his “solidarity” with Putin on Wednesday, with the Russian president talking about “constructive” talks.
In Hungary, Bolsonaro was received by his Hungarian counterpart Janos Ander and then he will meet with Orban. A joint press conference is scheduled after the meeting.
This is the first time that Hungary, a country of 9.8 million people, has welcomed the leader of Latin America’s largest power.
Relations between Brazil and Hungary have strengthened in recent years thanks to the ideological closeness of the two countries’ leaders.
Orban is one of the few Western leaders to attend Bolsonaro’s inauguration in early 2019.
Since returning to power in 2010, the Hungarian prime minister has sought to strengthen his country’s ties with non-EU countries.
In this context, a process of “opening to the east” began, turning to Russia and China.
He also had close ties to former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former US President Donald Trump, who has expressed “full support” for Orban ahead of the April 3 parliamentary elections in Hungary.
