Bomb explodes out of Hellenic Train headquarters in Athens; There are no injuries

An explosion occurred outside Hellenic Train’s offices in Athens, the Greek police said on Friday, adding that there were no immediate reports of injured.

Police cordoned off the area after two Greek media organizations were warned that an explosive device would explode in 35 minutes, police authorities said. A suspicious appearance bag was seen outside the building, which was emptied.

There is an ongoing investigation and, according to a police authority, the cause was probably a makeshift bomb.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Hellenic Train is a unit of Railrovie Dello Stato of Italy, which operates passenger and cargo routes in Greece.

A fatal train accident in 2023, Greece’s worst rail disaster, killed 57 people, mostly students, and injured dozens.

Many Greeks consider the accident as an example of neglecting the country’s railroads in recent decades and also a persistent state failure to deal with security issues.

The accident caused furious protests, fed even more for the lack of confidence in the institutions.
