“Bomb” in Austria: Sebastian Kurtz retires from political life

The former Austrian Chancellor is expected to announce his retirement from political life today, Thursday (2/12) Sebastian Kurtz according to Austrian media, at the time it is being held against him judicial investigation into corruption.

“The birth of his son” last weekend “gave him the impetus,” the Kronen Zeitung wrote on its website, citing the close circle of Sebastian Kurtz. The ομάδαVP party’s parliamentary group announced that the former chancellor would give a press conference at 11.30 local time. Kurtz resigned from the chancellery in October after the start of the investigation against him for corruption, but remained in the leadership of the party and head of his parliamentary group. He was replaced at the chancellery by former Foreign Minister and close associate Alexander Salenberg. In mid-November, the Austrian parliament lifted its parliamentary immunity.

From his side, Sebastian Kurtz denies the allegations.

The scandal erupted in October, when investigations into the chancellery, the finance ministry and other government offices on suspicion of embezzlement of public funds between 2016 and 2018. The goal was financing the publication of polls and praising Sebastian Kurtz in the media of the Österreich group, according to the APE-MPE.

Kurtz was the youngest prime minister in the world when he took office at the age of 31. The far-right ruling coalition collapsed in 2019 when its partner was at the center of a corruption scandal. New elections allowed him to return to the chancellery, this time leading a coalition with the Greens, until his resignation.
