The villain created by South Korean director Bong Joon Ho in “Mickey 17”, a demagogue politician played by Mark Ruffalo it was based on past dictators, but may sound familiar to viewers, because “the story always repeats itself,” the Oscar winner said in Berlin.
“He has, comically, all the faces of the bad politicians we know,” said the director on Saturday, through a translator, during the Berlin Film Festival.
Bong made history in the 2020 edition of the Oscar, when “parasite”, a dark social satire about the gap between rich and poor in modern Seoul, became the first unlossy production in English to win the best film award, greatest honor of the film industry.
His new black science fiction comedy starring Robert Pattinson is being shown in the special section of the festival, which is not competed for the awards.
“I created this character inspiring myself in the past and, as the story always repeats, it may seem that I am referring to someone in the present,” said Bong.
Based on Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7”, the film follows Pattinson as the worker Mickey Barnes, who alienates himself to earn his life repeatedly.
“Although it is a story of the future, it seems like a story that could happen in the present or past,” said Bong.
For young people in the audience, what is today science fiction can one day be a situation they experience, he said.
The director added that “Mickey 17” is his first love story and that the goal of his life was to make movies of all genres, with a possible exception.
“I’m a little fear of musicals,” he said.
“Mickey 17”, which is also starring Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie and Steven Yeun, is starting in theaters on February 28 in South Korea and other countries from March 5.
