Former Tropical Storm Bonnie has strengthened and is now a hurricane with winds of 130 kilometers per hour and intense wind gusts, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Located about 321 kilometers south of Salina Cruz, Mexico, Bonnie is moving in a west-northwest direction at 27.3 kilometers per hour and is expected to continue parallel to the southern coast of Mexico.
Bonnie’s outer rain bands will lead to periods of heavy rainfall in parts of southern Mexico through Monday night. Bonnie will also generate waves along the Mexican coast and likely cause life-threatening surf conditions and rip currents.
Bonnie is predicted to become a Category 2 hurricane in the next 24 hours as it heads into the open waters of the Pacific.
Like a storm, Bonnie made landfall on Friday in a Caribbean area on the Costa Rica-Nicaragua border, leaving minor damage, before crossing the Pacific on Saturday and entering Mexican waters.
