Book Fair 2023, Schlein on the Roccella case: “This government has a problem with dissent”

Moments of tension Book Hall 2023 of Turin. Thus, with a post on social networks, the director of the Salone Nicola Lagioia began the story of what happened during the meeting which the Minister of the Family Eugenia Roccella should have attended to present her book A radical family (Rubbettino). The conditional is a must because as soon as she arrived, the minister was challenged by a group of activists from the movements Extinction Rebellion And Not one less who went on stage, after making themselves heard in the audience, for read a press release which put women’s rights at the center, above all abortion, and the climate crisis.

Not subsiding the protest and the voice of the activists who shouted “Hands off the bodies and the earth”, “Open your eyes” and “Neither the lands nor our bodies are territories of conquest”, Minister Roccella subsequently left the encounter.

And here the real controversy began. The director of the Book Fair, the writer Nicola Lagioia, intervened and asked for explanations about what happened: «Democracy also contains protest, but let’s not lose this opportunity for dialogue. Send one of your delegates here to the stage to discuss with the minister. This is also the case in politics. You are demonstrating peacefully, now you are looking for a dialogue”. At this point the dispute also started against the director Lagioia, accused of not having guaranteed the meeting. “Shame on you, how can you say this is a peaceful demonstration?” the deputy of the Brothers of Italy attacks him Augusta Montaruli and then dramatically raise the tone: “He’s mishandling the presence of people who don’t think like him and we We’ll roll the drums when he’s gone.”.

A debate was unleashed on the incident which also involved Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who judged the incident “Unacceptable”. The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein commented: «In a democracy one must take into account that there is dissent, it is in the things it does not concern only who is in power. We are for harsh, heated confrontation but the problem this government has with all forms of dissent is surreal. I don’t know what the form of a government that attacks the opposition and intellectuals is called, but at least it seems authoritarian to me”.

The next day the lines are pulled: there are 29 complaints that should be notified to the activists. Interviewed by the newspaper Tomorrow they explained: «It says in the newspapers that we didn’t want to confront her, instead one of our representatives read a text in which we explained our position in defense of the climate and women’s rights. There is an obvious asymmetry between those who govern and ordinary citizens. An asymmetry of power and opportunity to express one’s thoughts. They have all the media space they want, they have the legislative power, they have spaces in every major event in this country. To argue that the minister has been silenced means not understanding this difference.
