Book that inspired the film “I’m Still Here” will get a sequel

The book by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, “I’m Still Here” – which gave rise to the film of the same name directed by Walter Salles – will get a sequel to be published next year by Companhia das Letras.

The first book, published in 2015, talks about the terrors faced by Paiva’s family during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Son of engineer and politician Rubens Paiva, who will be played in cinemas by Selton Mello, and Eunice Paiva, a role shared by Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro, the author gave an account of his father’s murder and his mother’s incessant search for partner.

Next, the author must mix political and family events from the more recent past, starting in 2013, when Marcelo Rubens Paiva began to be persecuted by the Escola Sem Partido movement.

“It will be about how my family suffered during the Bolsonaro period, who was our personal enemy and we didn’t even know it. He spat on my father’s bust, told lies about him taking part in the armed struggle”, said the writer in an interview with Folha de S. Paulo.

Walter Salles’ film was chosen by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (ABCAA) to represent Brazil in the dispute for a nomination in the film category. Best International Film node Oscars 2025 .

“I’m Still Here” arrives in Brazilian cinemas in November 7th.
