Books, films and documentaries explain the Independence of Brazil; see tips

The Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil is celebrated this Wednesday (7).

During the 200 years that have passed, several works, including books, films, documentaries and special programs, have portrayed the episode and the evolution of Brazilian society.

THE CNN lists publications that help explain its importance to the country.

Books

  • “1822”, by Laurentino Gomes (2010) : The book presents and compares different accounts of the 7th of September that redefined the course of our country;
  • “Dictionary of Independence: 200 years in 200 entries”, by Eduardo Bueno (2020) : Different and fun, a dictionary with 200 entries to celebrate 200 years of Brazilian Independence;
  • “The Kidnapping of Independence: A history of the construction of the myth of Sete de Setembro” , by Carlos Lima Junior, Lúcia Klück Stumpf and Lilia Schwarcz (2022): The historical construction of the 7th of September as a landmark of Independence from a deep study of the visual culture around the theme;
  • “D.Pedro I”, by Isabel Lustosa (2006) : The first emperor of Brazil had a trajectory marked by contradictions. Strong and untimely personality, which did not lack a grain of madness, d. Pedro was capable of the grossest, even brutal, gestures, but also of the greatest delicacy.
  • “Dictionary of the Independence of Brazil: History, Memory and Historiography”, organized by Cecilia Helena de Salles Oliveira and João Paulo Pimenta (2022) : It brings together the contribution of more than 200 authors from dozens of Brazilian and foreign institutions with the aim of gathering and exposing the current knowledge of research on Independence.
  • “D.Pedro – The Untold Story – the Man Revealed by Unpublished Letters and Documents”, by Paulo Rezzutti (2015) : Even after more than 200 years after the death of D.Pedro I, little is known about the man with a complex personality who was willing to die for a cause.

Films and documentaries

  • Independence or Death (1972) : With Tarcísio Meira and Gloria Menezes, the feature portrays the return of Dom João 6º to Lisbon and the fear that Brazil will revert to the status of a colony, while Brazilians articulate the independence campaign;
  • The Inconfidentes (1972) : With José Wilker and Luiz Linhares, the film portrays the Minas inconfidence, led by Tiradentes, a popular struggle that preceded the 7th of September;
  • Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil (1995) : With Marieta Severo, a satire of Brazil in the 18th century, narrating the adventures of the female protagonist of Brazil’s independence;
  • Paths to Independence: The Scream in the Streets (2012) : TV Brasil documentary brings together three historians to revisit the manuscripts of the time;
  • Bonifácio – The Founder of Brazil (2018) : Biography of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, patriarch of Brazilian independence;
  • CNN 200+ (2022) : A CNN Brazil reveals how the country developed over this period in its four most important areas: Economy, Health, Education and Society.
