Iranian border guards and Taliban members exchanged fire today on Iran’s border with Afghanistan, an incident that, according to an Iranian news agency, was sparked by a “misunderstanding”.
“The clash broke out between the Iranian border guards and the Taliban after a misunderstanding on the border, near the province of Nimroz,” the Tasnim news agency reported.
“Iranian farmers crossed the firewalls built inside Iranian territory and the Taliban reacted thinking they had crossed their borders,” the agency added.
The Taliban opened fire and the Iranians responded, but the incident ended quickly.
Iran, which shares a 900-kilometer border with Afghanistan, does not recognize the Taliban government. In recent months, he has seemed to be planning an approach with the Sunni Islamist organization, following a more pragmatic approach.
