Bored Ape Yacht Club Under Attack, Users Lose Millions in Stolen NFTs

On Monday (25), the Instagram and Discord accounts of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) – famous collection of NFTs – were hacked, the project claimed on its twitter.

Hackers posted a fake link on networks, claiming that users could secure virtual land plots in Yuga Labs’ new metaverse project – the same creators of BAYC – called Othersidewhich should be released later this week.

The objective was to obtain the victim’s wallet number, which was compromised by accessing the link. A series of Bored Apes — a collection of cartoon monkey images — and Mutant Apes — with zombie designs — have been transferred to new wallets owned by the hackers.

On its twitter account – where the project stated that it will do all its official communication until the investigations are finalized – the platform warned users: “There is no mint [emissão de ativos digitais] happening today. Looks like BAYC’s Instagram has been hacked. Do not create anything, click on links or link your wallet to anything.”

Even with the warning, Open Sea estimates show that 24 Bored Apes and 30 Mutant Apes have been stolen as of press time. The estimated value is U$ 13.7 millionbased on the minimum price of the 54 NFTs.

It is still unclear, however, which transfers refer to the scam and which were NFTs sent by the owners themselves to a safer location.

A Yuga Labs spokesperson told CoinDesk that the estimated losses are 4 Bored Apes, 6 Mutant Apes, and 3 BAKC, in addition to several other NFTs estimated at an approximate total value of US$ 3 million.

BAYC confirmed the events, “This morning, BAYC’s official Instagram account was hacked. The hacker posted a fraudulent link to a copycat website BAYC with a fake Airdrop, where users were asked to sign a ‘safeTransferFrom’ transaction. This transferred your assets to the scammer’s wallet,” he wrote.

It is still unclear what will happen to affected users. Still in publication, the project stated that anyone who had suffered from the incident or who had information that could help identify the perpetrators of the crime should contact them by email.

The company’s spokesperson further stated: “We are actively working to establish contact with affected users.”
