Boris Johnson accuses Russia of ‘war crimes’ in Ukraine

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson today accused Russia of being suspected of “war crimes” in Ukraine because of the weapons it uses against civilians and called on the UN to “demand” Russia’s withdrawal.

“What we have already seen on the part of Vladimir Putin’s regime regarding the use of ammunition fired against innocent civilians is, in my view, already a war crime,” he told British lawmakers, who stood up to applaud the Ukrainian. Ambassador Vadim Pristaiko who was in the building of the House of Commons.

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced yesterday, Monday, the launch of “as soon as possible” an investigation into the situation in Ukraine, referring to “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity”.

Amnesty International has denounced the use of cluster munitions banned by a 2010 international treaty, saying it should be investigated for “war crimes”.

“Putin made a serious miscalculation in his heinous attack on a sovereign nation,” Johnson said.

“He underestimated the extraordinary strength of the soul of the Ukrainian people as well as the unity and determination of the free world to oppose barbarism,” he added.

He called on UN member states to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine during a vote in the General Assembly today and to “demand that Putin withdraw his tanks”: “Yes, Putin is stepping up his efforts. “We will continue to increase financial pressure.”

Asked by the opposition why the UK does not impose sanctions on billionaire Roman Abramovich, owner of the Chelsea football team, he refused to comment on an individual case but assured that London would “continue to tighten the noose” on Russia.
