British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said today that he did not see any normalization of relations with President Vladimir Putin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Asked in an interview with LBC Radio if Putin would be welcomed back on the international stage if he showed remorse, Johnson said: “Repentance will be very difficult for Vladimir Putin now; nothing is impossible, I guess, but “I just can not see, no matter how hard I try, how we can normalize relations with Putin now.”
Johnson said the world was in danger of a repeat of 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea.
“People basically said, ‘This is horrible. We condemn it, we deny it – and we did. And we imposed sanctions. But at the same time, we somehow started negotiating with him for the next step,” Johnson told LBC. “And Putin basically used that as a way to turn the knife on Ukraine.”
“If the Ukrainians make any deal with Putin now, the risk is that they will do exactly the same and they know it. So the short answer is no. No normalization and the UK is very clear about that.”
