Boris Johnson: his personal phone had been circulating online for 15 years

06 from BoJo had been hanging out online for… 15 years! It is the latest bombshell revealed by several British media, including the BBC, and which questions the national security of the United Kingdom. The British Prime Minister’s personal cell phone number has remained freely available on the Internet throughout this time. At the origin of these revelations, a press release published in 2006, on which this famous number appears. At the time, Boris Johnson was simply elected from the opposition. But, according to the BBC, it appears the tenant at 10 Downing Street was still using it today.

Composed by Agence France-Presse, it resulted in an automatic message on Friday morning indicating that the phone is disconnected. This revelation comes as Boris Johnson is under increasing fire of attacks on his integrity, in particular for exchanges of SMS he had with industrialist James Dyson. In these exchanges dating from the start of the pandemic in March 2020, Boris Johnson had promised to “settle” the tax status of the employees of the manufacturer of household appliances having to come to the United Kingdom to produce respirators.

A “precious commodity” that must be secured

This affair highlighted the very close links between the conservative power and private interests and its great availability to respond directly to communications from businessmen. The fact that the Prime Minister’s personal number is in the public domain “matters” because “it is a very valuable commodity,” Peter Ricketts, the UK’s former national security adviser, commented on BBC radio.

He considered that it was “in the leader’s own interest” to ensure his online security: “I am talking above all about high-ranking politicians in sensitive positions, whose telephone conversations are likely to contain sensitive elements, sensitive business information, people trying to pressure them for favors or tax benefits, or discussions with foreign officials. ”

Among other scandals shaking the government, the Election Commission, regulator of the accounts of political parties, announced on Wednesday the opening of an investigation into the financing of the renovation of the apartment that Boris Johhson occupies in Downing Street. According to the media, the cost of the renovation reached 200,000 pounds (230,000 euros), which is much more than the 30,000 pounds covered by public funds.
