British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to offer Russia reassurances about the role of NATO, because it is a defense alliance and any European democracy should be able to join, his spokesman said on Monday, according to Reuters.
Russia, which annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, is demanding security guarantees, including a promise that NATO will never accept Ukraine.
“Russia has expressed concern about possible NATO aggression, but we have made it clear that these concerns are fundamentally unfounded, as NATO is a defense alliance,” said Johnson’s spokesman.
“But we want to work with Russia to provide diplomatic assurances on this front. These are not concessions, as the prime minister and other Western leaders have said that all European democracies have the right to join NATO.”
