The Conservatives have 360 MPs, so 54 need to write such letters to have a vote of confidence.

Several Conservative MPs have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with Boris Johnson and some of them have stated that they have submitted letters. Others have said they did but do not want to be named. The letters are confidential so 1922 Commission President Graham Brady is the only person who knows how many have actually done so.
What can happen during a vote of confidence?
All Conservative MPs can vote for or against their leader. If he wins, Johnson remains in place and his role can not be challenged again for 12 months. If he loses, he must resign and can not participate in the process of electing a new leader to follow.
