Boris Johnson’s Allies Shift Their Support to Rishi Sunak

Former Interior Secretary Priti Patel backed Rishi Sunak in the race to become prime minister, switching her support from Boris Johnson after the former leader retired.

“In these difficult times for our country, we must unite, putting public service first and working together. We care about our country and the huge challenges facing us, we must put political differences aside to give @RishiSunak the best chance of success,” tweeted Patel.

It’s a significant endorsement that shows Sunak is drawing Johnson’s supporters to his camp as he looks set to conquer the competition – and a major disappointment for Penny Mordaunt, who is hoping to win over some high-profile Johnson supporters this Monday. (24).

Michael Gove, another former Cabinet member who supported Sunak during the dispute, also tweeted in support of Sunak on Monday morning.

On Sunday, former UK finance minister Rishi Sunak confirmed his candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party to replace Liz Truss as head of government.

Sunak announced the candidacy on his Twitter account, saying that the goal is to overcome the “deep economic crisis” that affects the country and unite the party.

“The choice our party makes now will decide whether the next generation of Britons will have more opportunities than the last. That’s why I’m running to be your next prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party,” Sunak said.
