Boris Johnson’s successor will face war and inflation impacts

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned from his post on Thursday, amid a series of scandals and the resignation of at least 50 members of the government. Whoever takes office will have to overcome the crisis and a series of challenges, such as the impacts of the war in Ukraine and economic problems.

Boris Johnson’s successor will inherit the highest inflation among the G7 countries: 9.1% in 12 months. It is the highest in the last 40 years.

Soaring food and energy prices have created the highest cost of living in decades and threatens to cripple the world’s fifth-largest economy. The OECD predicts that the UK will head towards stagnation, with zero GDP growth in 2023.

Some consultancies speak of recession risk. During his tenure, Boris Johnson managed to implement Brexit, one of his biggest campaign promises made the decision of the 2016 referendum a reality.

Brexit, however, did not bring the expected boost to the economy by its supporters. What you see, for now, are the side effects. The break with the European Union caused a serious shortage of manpower and increased the costs of operations for the companies.

The next prime minister will still have to deal with the impacts caused by the war in Ukraine and the costs to the government. Britain has already pledged the equivalent of 14 billion reais in aid to Ukraine.

Boris Johnson is one of the most emphatic heads of state against Russian aggression and heads a sanctions list.

In April, he paid a surprise visit to Volodymyr Zelensky in the capital Kiev. The Ukrainian president regretted the resignation of Boris Johnson.

“He was a true friend of Ukraine. He supported us and the UK is on the right side of history, and I’m sure British policy on Ukraine will not change,” Zelenskya said.

Britain is not dependent on gas from Russia, but last year it imported 8% of the country’s oil. The challenge now is to find other suppliers.

In March, Boris Johnson promised that by the end of the year, the UK would cut all Russian oil imports.
