Born, an (Italian) woman may be driving

This time the new secretary general of NATO, the international organization for collaboration in the defense sector, which includes 30 states from all over the world, could be a woman. Gods three possible candidates in the running, according to various newspapers, two are Italian, and two women.

In place of Labor Jens Stoltenberg, former Norwegian premier and current secretary of the organization, whose second term is about to expire, could take over Theresa May, former British Prime Minister, Enrico Letta, Secretary of the Democratic Party, or Federica Mogherini, former Foreign Minister, former High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, now head of the College d’Europe in Bruges.

The three names emerged after the G7 finance ministers meeting in London. We will talk about it again at next NATO summit, which will be held in a few days in Brussels.

Theresa May, who will turn 65 in October, stepped down as prime minister in July 2019 and was replaced by Boris Johnson, who overturned the Brexit agenda in just a few months and would now like to nominate a UK leader of NATO. Also because, as he writes Republic, London, “once it left the European Union, it needs to relaunch itself in a large international organization. Also to legitimize the aspiration to return to a world power ».

Italy is the fifth taxpayer of the organization and, in Afghanistan, he was present with one of the most numerous contiguous. If until a few months ago the name of Matteo Renzi was circulating, in recent times there is talk of Enrico Letta, esteemed both in Europe and in Washington. But there is also a potential female candidate, Federica Mogherini, in fact.

So far the last (and only) Italian general secretary of NATO has been the liberal Manlio Brosio, former Minister of War, now fifty years ago.
