THE European Union intends to approve the sixth round of sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine at the forthcoming Foreign Affairs Council, the head of European diplomacy said on Monday. The European Commission is expected to present the sixth package of sanctions within the week, which is expected to include the embargo. The measure would deprive Moscow of large revenues, however so far divides EU Member States.
High Representative Borrell, who chairs the Foreign Affairs Council, said he hoped the EU would take “measures to severely reduce” Russian crude imports into Europe, but acknowledged that there was no unanimity so far.
“But I am convinced that, at least as far as oil imports are concerned, it will be possible to reach an agreement by the next council,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters and the Athens-based News Agency.
The Foreign Affairs Council is scheduled to meet on 10 and 16 May.
