Borrell: Russia needs to find other customers for oil

LAST UPDATE: 11.15

The EU plans to ban 90% of oil imports from Russia, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said at a European Council meeting.

“We will buy 90% less,” Borel said.

“The sixth package has been approved. Do not just think about the oil embargo, but also think about three other major non-swift banks. It will create even more difficulties for the Russian economy,” he said, adding that “this is another step and another show of unity.”

He also said that “it takes a long time in Europe for discussions because it requires unanimity”. Asked if Russia could sell oil to other countries, he said: “We can not prevent Russia from selling oil to others, but we are Russia’s most important customer. It must find another and they must definitely reduce the prices”.

The High Representative stressed that “the goal is to have less financial resources to feed the war machine. That will certainly happen.” Asked if he would be the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill in the new entries, he replied: “I believe it will be.” At the same time, Josep Borrell stated that today the defense is on the table.

“We have to do more in defense but we have to do it all together,” he said.
