Borrell: The establishment of a Palestinian state may have to be “imposed” on Israel by the international community

In the “enforcement” of the establishment of its state Palestine the international community may need to step up, according to what the head of European diplomacy said on Friday, Joseph Borel.

Unless a Palestinian state is established, “hate” and war will be perpetuated, “generation after generation,” the High Representative said in a speech at a university in Valladolid, Spain, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate.

Last Thursday Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state after the end of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Asked about the two-state solution, which he also says the US government — Israel's main ally — is seeking, Mr. Netanyahu said that “the prime minister of Israel must be able to say 'no' when necessary, even and to our best friends.”

Mr. Borrell estimated that there is no longer any chance for Israelis and Palestinians to reach a compromise solution. “The parties involved are too angry with each other to come to an agreement on their own”explained.

He called on “the Arab world, Europe, the US and the United Nations” as a whole to recognize the state of Palestine, even if resistance is shown by the Israel.

Mr. Borrell also accused part of the Israeli political leadership of funding Hamas to weaken the Palestinian Authority of Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and thus prevent the creation of a Palestinian state.

Mr. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the accusation.
