Borrell: The fate of Nord Stream 2 will be judged by Russia’s attitude towards Ukraine

The fate of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is linked to any possible conflict with Russia over Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Thursday, supporting the United States.

“Certainly, the operation of this infrastructure will also depend on the course of events in Ukraine and the attitude of Russia,” he told reporters after a meeting of European Union defense ministers in Brest.

“You can not imagine that on the one hand we are thinking of imposing sanctions (on Russia), just in case – and on the other hand to open infrastructure. It is certainly linked to the military situation in Ukraine, it is obvious.”

However, if Russia escalates, the decision to open the pipeline between Russia and Germany will be in the hands of German and European regulators, Borrell added.
