Borrell: Urgent need to avoid a regional escalation in the Middle East

The head of European diplomacy, Joseph Borel rang the alarm bells today saying that the Lebanon it should not be drawn into a regional conflict as a result of it war of Israel with Hamas.

Speaking during his visit to Lebanon, Borrell said it was imperative to avoid a regional escalation in the Middle East and warned Israel that “no one will emerge victorious from a regional conflict”.

Borrell made the above comments during a press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati following talks he had with senior government officials on the situation in and around Gaza, including the impact of the war and the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border.

“We are seeing an alarming intensification of fire along the Blue Line,” Borrell said.

After the withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon in 2000, after 22 years of occupation, the UN drew a “Blue Line” defining the border between the two countries.
