Borrell: We support human rights defenders in Russia

THE European Union Expresses its support for human rights defenders, democratic forces, the free media and independent civil society in Russiasays the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell in an announcement following the decision on suspension of Russia’s participation in the Council of Europewhile the war in Ukraine.

Borrell notes that, with its unprovoked and unwarranted aggression against Ukraine, Russia has violated the fundamental principles of the Statute of the Council of Europe, the UN Charter and international law.

“We regret that the Russian Federation has failed to heed our calls to immediately and unconditionally suspend its military operations in Ukraine,” said Josep Borrell.

He points out that, as a result of Russia’s behavior, theRussian citizens will no longer benefit from the protection afforded by the European Convention on Human Rights nor will they be able to refer cases of human rights violations to the European Court of Human Rights, and stresses that this is extremely worrying and another restriction on the rights of Russian citizens.

Finally, Mr Borrell said the EU was urging the Russian Federation to return quickly to compliance with human rights, international law and international humanitarian law.
