The German multinational Bosch has communicated to the works council the intention to close the plant in Lliçà d’Amunt (Barcelona), which would put 336 employees, as confirmed by the company to Europa Press this Thursday.
This closure would be added to that of the Castellet i la Gornal plant (Barcelona), announced in September and scheduled for November 2021, which affects 300 workers. Company sources have also confirmed that production will be transferred from the Catalan plant to the one it has in Wroclaw (Poland), in what UGT FICA has considered an “unmitigated relocation”.
Although there is no set timetable yet, Bosch’s intention is to formalize the closing “as soon as possible” during this year by not having found alternative products to ensure the competitiveness of the plant.
Bosch sources have explained that the plant in Poland “is bigger”, which makes it more profitable and competitive and have justified the closure of the Catalan plant by the falling market demand for conventional power brakes of vacuum due to the increase in the use of electromechanical servo brakes.
Furthermore, according to the company, this market “is exposed to intense competition”, which is why it has decided to adapt its production capacities.
The secretary of the Auto sector of UGT de Cataluà ± a, Yolanda Funes, has assured Europa Press that the company has justified the closure “for economic reasons that in Poland it is more profitable to produce ” for the price of labor. Anyway, Funes highlighted that this closure “is consequence of the industrial policy in Catalonia ” in recent years and has stressed that administrations do not realize that the automotive sector is leaving.
According to the union’s calculations, in addition to the 336 professionals at the plant, the closure would affect an additional 900 people between auxiliary companies and suppliers.
