Boston Marathon Bombing Case: US Supreme Court To Review Death Sentence

US Supreme Court has agreed to review the death sentence case of the Boston Marathon Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. In July 2020, a court of appeals had overturned the bomber’s death penalty sentence, citing that the trial judge had not questioned the prospective jurors properly and they might have been influenced by the press coverage at the time of the bombing.

Boston Marathon Bombing

On the day of the Annual Boston Marathon, April 15 in the year 2013, two bombs went off near the finishing line of the marathon. The attack killed 3 and injured hundreds, causing some to lose limbs. It was later revealed that the bombs were made at home, using pressure cookers. Two American brothers of Chechen-Kyrgyzstani decent, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were identified as the propagators of the attack.

Dzhokhar, one of the culprits of the Boston Marathon bombing.

After the identification, the two brothers had a shoot-out with the police where Tamerlan suffered from gun wounds and was run over by his own brother, Dzohkar, who was escaping in a stolen car. The brothers killed a police officer and injured another and Tamerlan himself died from the ensuing injuries while Dzhokhar managed to escape.

Dzhokhar’s Arrest

On 19th April a large manhunt was organized in the Watertown area, where thousands of law officers sealed the area. Dzhokhar was discovered hiding in a boat and was arrested after being wounded.

The bomber was convicted of a total of 30 charges and was sentenced to death. However, in 2020, the 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the death penalty. They cited that proper questioning had not been carried out of the jurors. They did, however, make it clear that as a result of the brutal attack he had carried out, he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Reviewing the Death Sentence

The Trump administration had been actively trying to reinstate capital punishments. The US Supreme Court has now agreed to review the judgment in the marathon bombing case. It is possible that Dzhokhar’s death sentence may be reinstated. This reinstatement may put the Biden administration in an awkward position, considering that the administration has pledged to do what it can to stop capital punishments.
