South Africa’s civil aviation authority concluded that a box where a penguin was eventually hit the controls of a helicopter and knocked down the aircraft in an accident on January 19 this year. A pilot and three passengers were on board. No one was injured, not even the animal.
The new report indicates that the box that contained the penguin slid from a passenger’s lap to the right and leaned against the helicopter’s headline, making the aircraft turn aside, the pilot loses control and ends up reaching the floor. The fall took place about 15 meters high shortly after takeoff in Bird Island, southern coast of South Africa.

The flight was intended to make an “air survey” from the region and an onboard expert was responsible for asking the pilot to transport the penguin. Transport, by itself, represents no irregularity. But the box where the animal was taken was not securely attached inside the aircraft, which made the object slide from a passenger’s lap and reach the commands. The propeller blades even touched the ground.
According to the report, the irregular transportation of Caixa, regardless of what it contained, was a contributing factor and represents a disrespect for local aviation operating procedures. The pilot omitted penguin transport. Standards require every load to be properly secure inside any aircraft.
The investigation does not show, in any way, that the penguin may have been responsible for the accident. There is no information on if anyone will be held responsible.
