BR-166, in the southwest of Bahia, remains closed after an accident with a tanker truck and even affects flights

Anyone who needed to pass through BR-116, this Wednesday (6), in the Vitória da Conquista section, southwest of Bahia, faced difficulties.

This is because the road remains closed, following an accident involving a tanker truck, last Monday (4), when a man was burned to death, as the vehicle caught fire after colliding with two trailers and a passenger car.

According to information from the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the truck was carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ended up spilling onto the road, which was therefore closed due to the risk of further explosions.

Considered the longest highway in Brazil, which crosses 10 states in the country, the road is blocked in both directions and the traffic jam exceeds 20 km in the south direction and 38 km in the north.

The blockade was determined by the Bahia Military Fire Department. In addition, two flights from the municipality's airport were changed.

The PRF explained that it would be necessary to burn all the fuel and only then open the runway. But after an assessment, the technical manager on site suspended the burning of the gas, because he identified that the load was still above 50%, which would take around five days to burn in the gaseous phase.

The decision was to transship the material.

To do this, a tanker truck was called, which left Jequié to receive the product and arrived at the location around 2 pm, when the procedure began. There is still no forecast for the completion of the service, however, after the transfer begins, a stop and go scheme will be set up for vehicle traffic.
