Diego Macedo Gonçalves do Carmo, 39 years old, known as “Brahma” suffered sanctions from the American government this Thursday (13), after being identified as responsible for laundering money from Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), according to a statement from the government body. government of the United States Department of the Treasury.

“Brahma”, who is serving a sentence in Brazil for drug trafficking, has properties in the United States and the US government's determination is that all properties and interests in his properties or those of people linked to the criminal be blocked.

In addition to asking that cases be reported to the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the United States government announced that those involved in possible transactions may face civil and criminal penalties.

However, before being considered a “key operator” responsible for laundering “hundreds of millions of dollars” for the PCC, classified by US authorities as “the most notorious criminal organization in Brazil and one of the largest in Latin America” , Carmo committed other crimes in Brazil.

The crimes of “Brahma”

A CNN carried out searches in the Courts of Justice in Brazil and found information on cases in which Carmo appears as being investigated, accused or convicted.

Carmo, or “Brahma”, who at one point had a photo of beer on his “WhatsApp” profile, which gave rise to his nickname, has been to prisons in Brazil, for crimes such as homicide, drug trafficking, among other crimes committed in Brazil. region of Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo.

For the Public Ministry of São Paulo (MPSP), “Brahma” was already a relevant name in the purchase and sale of drugs carried out by the criminal faction in the interior city of São Paulo. In an investigation by Gaeco (Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime) in 2018, which identified the PCC's tentacles in the Campinas region, “Brahma” negotiated 72 kilos of drugs with an intermediary.

The investigation shows several conversations in which “Brahma” is pointed out as the right-hand man of another leader of the faction in the interior, “Holanda”. In one of the dialogues, about the arrival of drugs at a sales point in Campinas, a suspect asks the interlocutor if he occupied “Brahma's” place or if he was together (closed) with him. Holanda responds that both “closed” together, which for the MP reveals the importance of the criminal within the faction.

Kidnapping, murder and rescue plans

In 2012, Carmo was convicted of a murder that occurred two years earlier. In 2010, he and other suspects kidnapped and killed five people who had posed as police officers to extort members of the faction operating in Jundiaí.

The crime would have been authorized by another relevant figure within the PCC structure, “Gegê do Mangue”, who would have ordered the kidnapping of the victims so that the criminal trial could be held.

Years later, already at another level in the escalation of organized crime and moving “approximately 1 billion reais”, according to the MP, “Brahma” was arrested for being identified as one of the participants in a mega bank robbery in the city of Uberaba, in 2019.

In 2020, while serving his sentence in a state prison, authorities feared an escape or rescue attempt for the prisoner, who held a relevant position in the criminal structure. Drones were seen flying over the prison and the advice was that he be sent to a federal prison.

Later, Carmo was taken to the Federal Prison of Rondônia, where he continues to serve his sentence for the crimes committed.
