Six months pregnant, young Joyce Sousa Araújo, 21 years old, was hospitalized in December last year after experiencing severe headaches. At the hospital, a brain aneurysm was found and she subsequently suffered brain death.
Due to her pregnancy, she is being kept alive on life support at Santa Casa de Rondonópolis (MT), 218 km from Cuiabá. The objective is to save the baby.
According to Santa Casa, Joyce was admitted to the hospital on December 20, 2024 and was diagnosed with a ruptured brain aneurysm. The medical team carried out all the necessary procedures, but the patient became brain dead.
Currently, Joyce is around the 26th week and remains under the care of a multidisciplinary team made up of intensive care physicians and obstetricians, who work to ensure the necessary conditions for the development of the fetus.
Doctors are waiting to deliver the baby and increase the baby’s chances of survival. The situation requires intensive care and constant monitoring, but there is still no date for delivery.
João Matheus Silva, Joyce’s husband, reported that they are from Tocantins and moved to Mato Grosso in search of better job opportunities.
Now, the family faces the pain of imminent loss and the need for financial resources to transport Joyce’s body back to her homeland. They started a fundraising campaign to make transportation possible.
“She is going to die because her brain died”, lamented João Matheus, describing Joyce as a happy girl. The young woman leaves two daughters, one aged 7 and the other aged 3.
Bela Borges, Joyce’s sister-in-law, added that doctors are maintaining Joyce’s heart and breathing artificially using devices to preserve the baby’s life. According to her, the family decided to make the case public due to their serious financial situation.
Brain death
The Ministry of Health defines brain death as the complete and irreversible loss of brain functions, being legally recognized as death in Brazil.
An aneurysm, in turn, is an abnormal dilation of a blood vessel, the rupture of which, as in Joyce’s case, can have serious consequences, including brain death.
