Brainard (Fed): The slowdown in structural inflation is welcome

The slowdown in March in some measures of inflation is welcome, but we will have to see in the coming months whether this decline will continue before we reach conclusions, said today the member of the Board. of the Federal Reserve, Lael Brainard commenting on data released today on inflation.

Brainard said that on a structural level, excluding energy and food, inflationary pressures eased in March more than expected.

The structural index of inflation rose 0.3% in March from 0.5% the previous month, according to data released today. This is the smallest increase in the last six months.

“So this development is very welcome and we will watch [το επόμενο διάστημα] to see if we will continue to see decline [των τιμών] “and in the coming months,” Brainard said.

He noted, however, that “inflation is very high and declining is our most important task.” .

Brainard said the Fed plans to raise interest rates rapidly and could decide at its next meeting in May to start shrinking its balance sheet starting in June.
