“Brake” at the entrance of young people into social media – thoughts on “digital adulthood” limit in the EU on a proposal from Greece

The European Union is a step before a worldwide pioneer in protecting children from the dangers of excessive use of social media, thanks to a new proposal gaining ground in Brussels with a key inspired by Greece. The proposal, signed by the Greek Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, together with his counterparts from France and Spain, provides for drastic restrictions on the use of minors’ social media. The aim is to establish uniform European rules, such as introducing age “digital adulthood” at EU level, under which parental consensus will be required for access to platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram and Snapchat. The Greek side, as noted, is leading this effort with the aim of not the complete prohibition but the creation of a framework that will emphasize age and the design of digital services that do not enhance the addiction of minors.
