Brazil assumes the presidency of the UN Security Council during the month of July

This July, Brazil assumes the presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN). The position is held for one month, following an English alphabetical list of members. In June, Albania led the sessions.

The Brazilian ambassador to the UN, Ronaldo Costa Filho, highlighted the search for “peace and security”, fighting violence, including sexual violence, and prioritizing “strategic communication in peacekeeping operations”.

Other points raised are the promotion of debates on children in armed conflicts and the “balance between transparency and efficiency”. As he explained, it is necessary to be accountable to the public and other countries not represented on the Council, but description, in some cases, is essential to enable “frank dialogue”.

In January of this year, Brazil assumed a rotating seat, with a mandate for the 2022/2023 biennium, being the 11th time on the Council. Other countries that also joined in early 2022 were Albania, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates.

The Security Council is made up of five permanent members. They are: United States, Russian Federation, France, United Kingdom and People’s Republic of China. Another 10 nations are elected for biennium (two-year) terms. Currently, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway also make up the Council as rotating members.
