Brazil: Bolsonaro fires Petrobras president 40 days after appointing

Brazil’s far-right president Zaich Bolsonaro on Monday fired the head of the giant public oil company Petrobras, Jose Mauro Coelho, whom he had appointed to the post just 40 days ago, the Ministry of Energy announced.

“The federal government, as the majority shareholder of Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras), has decided to change (the person) in the presidency of the company,” the ministry said in a press release.

Mr. Koeliou was the third president of the group in just over a year.

Without elaborating on the reasons for its decision, the Brazilian government thanked him for his effort, stressing at the same time that “Brazil is currently going through a difficult period due to the extreme fluctuations in hydrocarbon prices in international markets.”

The head of state will run for a second term in the October elections and is increasingly under pressure to control the sharp rise in inflation in the largest Latin American country.

The government has nominated a new president, Cayo Mario Paes de Andrazzi, the deputy finance minister in charge of reducing bureaucracy.

Mr Coelho’s two predecessors, Hoberto Castello Branco and Joaquim Silva e Luna, have also been fired due to rising inflation and rising fuel prices.

Mr Andraji has “all the qualifications” to run the business in a way that will allow “current challenges to be overcome”, according to the energy ministry.
