Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday he would respect the outcome of October’s presidential election, whatever it is, as long as the process is “clean and transparent”.
In an interview on an evening program of the Globo television station with high viewership, the far-right politician insisted, without presenting any evidence, that there had been fraud in previous electoral contests in Brazil.
Bolsonaro did not mention the electronic voting system, which he has campaigned against for months, claiming it is easy to falsify its results. The former army captain also stressed that the armed forces should have a say in the decision if the elections were transparent.
Polls show Bolsonaro trailing his rival, former president (2003-2010) Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
While the interview was being broadcast, citizens in several Brazilian cities had taken to the streets and were banging pots and pans and chanting “Bolsonaro out”.
The Brazilian president said he took over the country in a bad economic situation, then was hit by the covid-19 pandemic and the effects of the Ukrainian war and still managed.
Among his achievements he cited an increase in monthly benefits for low-income families that will benefit 20 million Brazilians, a move that has boosted his popularity in recent weeks and reduced Lula’s lead.
Bolsonaro has rejected allegations that deforestation in the Amazon has increased during his tenure. He added that the part of the Amazon located in Brazil is equal to the size of western Europe and the country’s authorities have preserved 66% of its green areas.
“Brazil does not deserve to be attacked in this way. We will try to improve (its image abroad),” he stressed.
