Brazil can be an “example to the world” with zero deforestation, says Climate Observatory coordinator

Brazil can be an “example to the world” if it applies in practice what the elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), has said about reducing deforestation in the country’s forests, especially the Amazon, evaluates the technical coordinator of the Climate Observatory, Tasso Azevedo.

“We hope that Brazil, with its commitment to zero deforestation, if it achieves this commitment, will reduce emissions by more than 50%. That would be an example to the world”, says Azevedo.

According to him, Lula’s speeches about combating deforestation and climate change generated “enthusiasm” about Brazil at COP27.

In addition, Azevedo points out that, after four years in which the country has lost relevance in the climate debate in relation to its “size, responsibility and potential”, it will be able to regain the historical role it had, as in the negotiations of the Paris agreement. , signed in 2016.

The coordinator of the Climate Observatory believes that it is possible to achieve the commitments indicated by the president-elect. “We already did that back there, between 2004 and 2012, and we can do it again and be an example to push the world towards this drastic reduction in emissions that we need”.

Currently, Brazil is the fifth largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Unlike other major emitters, which occupy the list for their industrial activities, in the Brazilian case emissions occur due to changes in land use, that is: deforestation of forests, especially in the Amazon

“Each time we deforest the Amazon, it has a double effect: we put more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and reduce the planet’s ability to absorb carbon back”, points out Azevedo.
