Brazil Cheese World Cup starts this Thursday (15); see schedule

It happens in full Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima financial heart of São Paulo, the 2nd edition of the Brazilian Cheese World Cup an event that recognizes the best cheeses in the world focusing on Brazilians from a delegation of Brazilian and foreign judges.

With the competitions approved by the Guilde Internationale des Fromagers, the world is the only national award that embraces the entire cheese sector, involving artisanal and industrial producers.

In its first edition, held in the Minas Gerais city of Araxá a year before the pandemic, the World Cheese Championship in Brazil had a total of 953 cheeses registered and attracted about 33 thousand people.

On the occasion, 239 medals were delivered by 160 Brazilian and foreign judges. And the result contributed to confirm the success of Brazilian cheeses on the international scene.

This year, there will be three contests: to highlight the products, producers and national traders.

“We have seen our Brazilian cheese win medals abroad, competing with the European cheesemaking tradition. But arriving in Brazil, nobody knows what cheese this is. Our mission is to shed light on our national production and recognize the best that has been done here”, says Débora Pereira, general director of SerTãoBras, a non-profit civil society that focuses on disseminating information to the general public. and, at the same time, invest in the technical training of the cheese maker.

For this edition, around 1,200 cheeses will be registered for the 2nd Cheese and Dairy Products Contest and it is expected that 50,000 people and cheese lovers will participate in the event.

The program includes technical conferences, discussion forums, training courses and harmonized tastings.

In addition to the Cheese and Dairy Products contest that took place in 2019, two other contests, unprecedented in Brazil, will recognize the Best Cheese Maker (indicated for cheese producers, who will be evaluated on their technical skills) and the Best Cheese Maker in Brazil (aimed at for cheese merchants).

Big names are at the forefront of the jury, such as Claude Maret, president of the Fédération des Fromagers de France, and Vanessa Alcolea, technical manager of Pardinho Artesanal – SP cheeses and a member of SerTãoBras.

The jury is made up of a team of 200 judges, including chefs, journalists and sommeliers certified by the renowned French school Mons Formation.

In parallel, two fairs take place simultaneously: one for a paying public, aimed at the professional cheese sector.

Brands such as Fermentech, Caplab, Tirolez, in addition to the sponsor Gruyère AOP, guaranteed their presence before the professional public to present their products and participate in negotiation rounds.

And another one is an open-air market for producers, which has stands offering a variety of products such as cheeses, oils, honeys, accessories, wines and Japanese sake.

Among the names already confirmed are Azeite Borriello, Fazenda Atalaia, Búfala Almeida Prado, Pardinho Artesanal, Coletivo Caminho do Queijo Paulista, Sede 261 and Megasake.

In order to serve the large expected audience, during lunch on Friday and Saturday, the side street where the event will take place, Rua Lício Nogueira, will be closed to house restaurants and food trucks.

In addition to the event’s program, 15 selected establishments participate in the Gastronomic Tour of the World Cheese Cup in Brazil, which takes place between the 15th and 25th of September. Check out the full article here.
