Countries from the so-called Global South, including China and Brazil, published this Friday (27) a joint note with strategies to end the war between Ukraine and Russia. The document was released after the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held this week in the United States.
The note presents nine points about the conflict. In them, the countries say they are “deeply concerned about the ongoing hostility in Ukraine” and the risks arising from the conflict. The war in Eastern Europe has been going on for more than two and a half years.
In addition to Brazil and China, the following signed the document: South Africa, Algeria, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Mexico, Kenya, Turkey and Zambia.
“We emphasize the importance of supporting a lasting solution by the parties to the conflict, through inclusive diplomacy and political means based on the UN Charter”, says the note, without condemning a specific side of the conflict.
The document also proposes forming a group of “friends for peace” to “foster common understandings to support global efforts to achieve lasting peace.” According to the group, Russia and Ukraine must observe principles for de-escalating the conflict, in order to “not expand the battlefield”.
The note also calls for increased humanitarian assistance and protection for civilians, including women and children. Furthermore, the countries assert that civilian infrastructure, including peaceful nuclear facilities, should not be targets of military operations.
The group of countries also calls for an end to the use of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Furthermore, the statement supports mediation efforts for the exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
Another point in the statement is a request for efforts to increase international cooperation in areas such as energy, currencies, finance, trade, food security and critical infrastructure security, with the aim of maintaining the stability of global industrial and supply chains.
Lula and Zelensky
This week, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) at the United Nations and criticized what the Brazilian called the “thesis” for resolving the war in Europe supported by Brazil and China.
In response, Lula said that there is no “proposal” for resolving the conflict, but a “thesis” that dialogue is important.
“He [Zelensky]if he were smart, he would say that the solution is diplomatic, not military. And that depends on the ability to sit and talk. Listen to the opposite and try to reach an agreement so that the Ukrainian people can have peace of mind in their lives”, he declared.
