The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) condemned the Israeli attack on a school run by the United Nations (UN) in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.
In a note published on Thursday (6), the ministry expressed “absolute repudiation”, reinforced support for Palestinian refugees and called for an immediate ceasefire.
“The Brazilian government reiterates that attacks on civilian populations and infrastructure, in violation of the principles of distinction and proportionality, constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law. There is no justification for military attacks on UN installations. Likewise, densely populated areas should be spared”, says the statement.
According to Itamaraty, since the start of the Israeli offensive, more than 430 attacks have been recorded on the facilities of the United Nations refugee agency for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
In Thursday’s attack, at least 40 people were killed and dozens were injured.
Israel admitted carrying out the attack and claimed that it targeted more than 20 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters who were there. The school, which housed around 20,000 people, was hit by at least three missiles.
The Israeli government has already accused employees of the UN school of participating in the first Hamas attacks, carried out in October 2023. However, in an independent investigation carried out at the organization’s request, Tel Aviv did not present evidence of the accusations.
The Israeli offensive takes place at a time of negotiation for a ceasefire that would involve the release of hostages captured by Hamas in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.
