The Brazilian government has condemned Israel’s attack on a school housing displaced people in Deir-al Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip. The bombing killed at least 30 people and left more than 100 injured.
According to the Itamaraty note, Brazil expresses absolute repudiation of the use of military force against the civilian population and calls for full respect for human rights and international humanitarian law.
The text also says that Brazil reiterates the urgency of implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735 and calls on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and engage in talks that allow for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.
Target would have been Hamas control center
The Israeli military launched the attack to destroy a Hamas command and control center inside the compound.
Most of the victims from the school who arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital after the attack were women and children, according to Dr. Khalil Al-Daqran, a spokesman for the hospital. More than 4,000 displaced people were sheltering at the school, the Palestinian Civil Defense said.
The attack came shortly after the Israeli military issued new evacuation orders further south in the town of Khan Younis, where Israel launched a new offensive earlier in the week that killed dozens of Palestinians.
Residents of the southern neighborhoods were told to leave after being warned that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would “operate forcibly” in the area.
