The number of foreign tourists who visit Brazil annually could reach the ten million mark in the next three to four years, believes the World Tourism Organization (WTO), which opened this week the entity’s regional office for the Americas, in Rio de Janeiro. January.
In 2023, Brazil strives to return to pre-pandemic levels and reach six million international visitors. From January to September, there were 4.4 million foreign tourists, who injected almost R$25 billion into the Brazilian economy.
For the OMT, however, this is little compared to Brazil’s potential. “Why do only six million come here?” asked the organization’s general secretary, Zurab Pololikashvili, at the opening of the National Tourism Exhibition, taking place this weekend in Brasília.
Zurab mentioned nature, culture, food, Carnival and Christ the Redeemer as the country’s main attractions. In his assessment, it is feasible to think of an annual volume of “at least” ten million international visitors over the next three to four years.
According to the secretary general of the WTO, Brazil can take advantage of the presidency of the G-20 in 2024 also in tourism. In addition to the summit of the leaders of the 20 largest economies on the planet, scheduled for November in Rio de Janeiro, dozens of meetings are scheduled in several Brazilian cities throughout the year.
“Let’s use these events [do G-20] to show that tourism is the future of Brazil”, said Zurab.
Regional office
On Thursday (14), OMT opened a regional office for the Americas in Rio, a 500 square meter space with a privileged view of the city center.
It will be the organization’s third office worldwide, in addition to the headquarters in Madrid and a unit in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
“This office will help promote tourism in the region,” said Zurab. Authorities from Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay were present at the inauguration ceremony.
The tourism chain employs 7.9 million workers in the country and generates around 8% of GDP.
In the government’s Multi-Year Plan (PPA), referring to the 2023-2027 four-year period, the goal established is to reach the end of the period with 8.1 million foreign tourists and US$9 billion in annual spending by foreign visitors.
