After two years of reduction, the number of deaths from dengue is rising again in Brazil. According to the latest epidemiological bulletin released by the Ministry of Health, the country records 951 deaths confirmed by the disease and another 114 under investigation. With that, it should surpass the record of 986 deaths, from 2015.
The 951 deaths added up to November 5 already exceed the total of the previous two years: in 2021, there were 244 deaths, while in 2020, 574. Compared to last year, the increase in victims is almost 290%.
“We have a real tendency to reach close to a thousand deaths this year, reaching a record with this disease that challenges society as a whole”, warns Alexandre Naime Barbosa, vice president of the Brazilian Society of Infectology (SBI).
The states with the highest number of deaths were São Paulo, with 274 cases; Goiás, with 142; Paraná, with 107; Santa Catarina, with 88, and Rio Grande do Sul, with 66 deaths.
Regarding the number of cases also until the beginning of November, the country registers a growth of 180% in comparison with the same period of 2021, with 1.3 million patients with probable dengue.
The Midwest region leads the disease incidence rate, with 1,900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the South and Southeast regions, with 1,036.2 and 502.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively.
The vice president of the SBI warns that the deaths are evidence of a lack of continuing medical education. “Dengue is a disease that, if treated at an early stage and correctly, death is quite rare”, says Naime.
The alert issued by the infectology entity also highlights the spread of the mosquito that causes the disease, the aedes aegyptiall over the country.
