Brazil expands agricultural storage capacity by 3% in the first half, says IBGE

The agricultural storage capacity in the country reached 188.8 million tons in the first half, a growth of 3% compared to the second half of 2021. The data were released this Wednesday (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

According to the survey, the number of establishments that store agricultural products grew by 2.2% from the second half of 2021 to the first half of this year, totaling 8,378. Mato Grosso data was not collected due to operational difficulties, but the state’s capacity was estimated based on information provided in the first half of last year.

Silos predominate in the country, with a useful capacity of 96.1 million tons, followed by bulk warehouses, with 70 million tons, and conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses, with 22.6 million tons.

Among the states, Rio Grande do Sul has the largest number of establishments (2,183), while Mato Grosso has the largest storage capacity (46.9 million tons).

The total of products stored at the end of the first half of 2021 reached 65.5 million tons, an increase of 10.5% in relation to what was stored at the end of the first half of 2021, at 59.2 million tons.

In relation to the five main agricultural products stored in the storage units, which represent 95.8% of the total, the largest volumes are soybeans (35.3 million tons), corn (19.3 million), rice (5.1 million ), wheat (2.3 million) and coffee (800 thousand).
