Brazil exports 7,100 tonnes of meat per day in early 2022

Brazilian beef exports increased 32.2% in the first five days of January compared to the same period in 2021, from 5,400 tonnes per day to 7,100 tonnes per day. The end of the suspension of purchases by China and the growth of the North American market explain the rise.

With an average price per ton 12% higher than in 2021, the average revenue generated for the sector rose 48.1%. Profit jumped from $24.2 million in January last year to $35.8 million in the first few days of 2022.

Know the reasons

In September, meat purchases by China were suspended due to suspected cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply resumed certifications on December 15, and the high volume of exports was noticed in the first days of 2022.

The Brazilian Association of Refrigerators (Abrafrigo) also highlighted that the United States has become the second destination for Brazilian in natura (non-industrialized) meats. Exports to the North American market grew 148.9%. There were 59,545 tons in 2020 and 148,177 tons in 2021.

“China is buying a lot, with good shopping offers. In addition, the United States also ended the year with a good volume of purchases”, said the agricultural market consultant, Hyberville Neto.

Lower export volume in 2021

According to data from Abrafrigo, last year’s export volume was 7% lower than in 2020, when the market reached a record 2,016,223 tonnes.

Despite the drop in exports, 2021 revenue for the sector was US$9.236 billion, an increase of 9%. This positive balance is justified by the average price sold, especially to China, which accounted for about half of exports.

“We had a reduction in the supply of cattle, and this reduction ends up impacting sales in volume. On the other hand, there were good sales and maintenance of a good pace of sales to China, even with the suspension”, he explained.

The balance of December exports placed Chile in third position among Brazilian meat importers, registering an increase of 22.4% with 110,626 tonnes in 2021.

The other main markets are Egypt (73,612 tonnes), United Arab Emirates (49,711 tonnes), Philippines (46,349 tonnes) and Saudi Arabia (40,870 tonnes).

“Over the year, 104 countries increased their imports of Brazilian beef, while another 68 reduced their purchases,” Abrafrigo said.
