Brazil does not recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization, following the vision of the United Nations (UN), said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) this Friday (27). However, he said the country views the radical Islamic group’s actions as terrorist acts.
“Brazil’s position is as clear and clear as possible. Brazil only recognizes as a terrorist organization what the UN Security Council recognizes, and Hamas is not recognized by the Council as a terrorist organization, because it contested elections in the Gaza Strip and won”, Lula declared to journalists.
“What we said is that Hamas’ act was terrorist. We said it loud and clear. That it is not possible to carry out an attack, kill innocent people, kidnap people, the way they did, without measuring the consequences of what happens afterwards, because, now, what we have is the insanity of the Prime Minister of Israel, wanting to end the Gaza Strip, forgetting that there are not only Hamas soldiers there, but women and children, the greatest victims of the war”, he added.
Lula also reinforced his commitment to rescuing Brazilians who are in the conflict region in the Middle East and that he intends to dialogue with all sides to achieve this objective.
“We will not let a single Brazilian stay in Israel or the Gaza Strip. We will try to look for everyone, because this is the role of the Brazilian government. If I have information about ‘Lula, there is the president of this country who is a friend of Hamas’, that’s who I’ll call: ‘tell Hamas to release the hostage!’”, commented the president.
The Brazilian Presidency plane has been in Cairo, Egypt, for a week, awaiting an agreement between the region’s authorities so that the Rafah crossing, on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, can be opened so that Brazilians can pass through and be brought back to Brazil.
Recalling Russia’s war against Ukraine, Lula also highlighted that Brazil’s position is in favor of peace and that this does not mean entering the war supporting one side or the other.
“I will continue talking about peace. The most impressive thing is to overcome the power of bullets with the power of conversation. The power of dialogue is capable of defeating the most powerful bomb that human beings are capable of producing,” she said.
“Brazil’s position was extraordinary, recognized and praised by everyone at the United Nations (…) Our position is clear: in all wars, there is no side that is more to blame”, he concluded.

Birthday and health
Lula turns 78 years old this Friday (27). This meeting with journalists was one of the first in-person events that the president participated in after undergoing hip surgery at the end of September.
He said he was recovered and feeling well. “A recovery that I didn’t believe could be so quick,” he commented.
Furthermore, he said that he should resume his travel schedule soon, both around the world and within Brazil.
“My first trip will be to COP28, in the United Arab Emirates. Afterwards, I go to Germany, because there is a debate between Brazilian and German businesspeople. And, before the Emirates, on the 30th, I’m thinking of going to Saudi Arabia to present the park to businesspeople and investors,” he said.
“And then, when I return, I will start traveling around Brazil. Next year will be a full year of traveling around Brazil to launch PAC works, inaugurate Minha Casa Minha Vida, technical schools, federal schools, launch new universities in this country. Because Brazil cannot miss the opportunity to do what we are committed to, so that Brazil can definitively become a first world country. We are tired of being a first world country.”
