Brazil gets excited about meeting proposed by Denmark to discuss peace in Ukraine

The Brazilian government positively evaluates the idea launched by Denmark to host a high-level meeting, in July, to discuss a peace process between Russia and Ukraine.

The Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, suggested holding a summit in the Nordic country to deal with the matter. He himself said that the engagement of China, India and Brazil in the process was “necessary”.

Parallel to Rasmussen’s declarations, made in Brussels after a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Itamaraty was informed of the Danish initiative.

“If Ukraine thinks the time has come to have such a meeting, that would be fantastic. And Denmark would obviously like to host it,” said Rasmussen.

According to him, a meeting should not only include allies of Ukraine. “It is necessary to build interest and involvement from countries like India, Brazil and China,” he added.

A CNN former Chancellor Celso Amorim said that he sees the Danish idea as positive and recalls the history of mediation by Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, in peace negotiations or political detensioning –as in Colombia (with the FARC) and in Venezuela ( of the Nicolás Maduro government with the opposition).

However, Amorim sees the need for the presence not only of Ukraine, but also of representatives of Russia. “The delicacy is in knowing whether the two sides will be invited”.

For the ex-chancellor, who is now head of the special advisory office for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) at the Planalto Palace, the current moment may favor yet another meeting of “high representatives” of countries interested in a peace process in the than a summit of leaders – including presidents and prime ministers.

Amorim believes that the involvement of an African country –he sees South Africa as being able to play this role– is also worth thinking about. Also because, with that, he would bring all the members of the Brics to the negotiating table.
