Brazilian health regulator Anvisa today approved the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19 in children aged 5-11.
This approval does not, however, mean that children can be vaccinated immediately.
To do this, the Ministry of Health must first decide whether to provide special doses for children (one third of an adult’s dose) and whether to include this solar group in the national immunization plan.
“Collective vaccination reduces the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to this solar group and therefore limits transmission from children to adolescents, adults and the elderly,” said Meiruze Freitas, director of Anvisa. its decision.
“Children will therefore be eligible for vaccination from the age of five,” she added.
The pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 615,000 people in Brazil, the second deadliest country in the world after the United States.
However, the number of deaths and new infections has dropped significantly in recent months, thanks to the evolution of the vaccination program, which has affected the population since the age of 12.
Almost 66% of the country’s population of 213 million has been fully vaccinated.
