Brazil had 38 thousand murders in 2024, points out Ministry of Justice

In 2024, Brazil recorded 38,075 people murdered, according to data from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) released this Friday (17). Each day, 104 people were victims, a reduction of around 7% compared to last year, when 40,768 cases were registered.

The numbers are from the National Public Security System (Sinesp), which receives incidents from the state security departments in each state. The ministry points out that Rio de Janeiro did not send the data and Alagoas, Roraima and São Paulo did not publish the complete numbers.

The survey carried out by CNN considers cases of feminicide, intentional homicide, robbery and bodily injury followed by death last year. The vast majority of victims are men, who account for more than 33,000 deaths.

Among the states with available data, Bahia leads with the highest number of murders, with 4,480. Following are Pernambuco (3,402), Ceará (3,272), Rio de Janeiro (3,128) and Minas Gerais (3,042). The month of March was the month with the highest number of deaths: 3,483.

Last year, the murder rate per 100,000 inhabitants was 17.91.

In cases of femicide alone, there were 1,400 cases in the year — around 4 deaths per day. The state of São Paulo led the number of cases with 229 victims.
