Data from the Violence Atlas released this Tuesday (18) reveal that Brazil had 46,409 homicide cases registered in 2022. This is equivalent to one murder every 11 and a half minutes.
The material, prepared by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP), points to underreporting in the numbers related to violent deaths in the country. This occurs because part of the deaths are classified as Violent Death of Undetermined Cause (MCVI).
For this reason, the estimated number of homicides to occur in Brazil in 2022 is 52,391 – the equivalent of one case every ten minutes.

The states with the highest homicide rates are Bahia (45.1), Amazonas (42.5) and Amapá (40.5). On the other hand, the lowest rates were recorded in São Paulo (6.8), Santa Catarina (9.1) and Distrito Federal (11.4).
