Brazil has 1,369 confirmed cases of monkey pox according to data from the Ministry of Health.
The records were carried out in the states of São Paulo (1,031), Rio de Janeiro (169), Minas Gerais (63), Federal District (20), Paraná (21), Goiás (18), Bahia (11), Ceará (4 ), Rio Grande do Norte (2), Espírito Santo (2), Pernambuco (7), Tocantins (1) , Acre (1), Amazonas (1), Rio Grande do Sul (6), Mato Grosso do Sul (5 ), Amazonas (1), and Santa Catarina (7).
The disease, caused by a virus that belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family, can affect anyone. There are two groups of monkeypox virus: those from West Africa and those from the Congo Basin (Central Africa).
How is monkeypox transmitted from monkeys?
Monkeypox virus is transmitted from person to person through close contact with injuries, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. The incubation period is usually 6 to 13 days, but can range from 5 to 21 days.
The disease begins, in most cases, with a sudden, strong and intense fever. The patient also has headache, nausea, exhaustion, tiredness and fundamentally the appearance of ganglia (swellings popularly known as “inguas”), which can happen both in the neck region, in the axillary region, and in the genital region.
The manifestation on the skin occurs in the form of blisters or lesions that can appear on different parts of the body, such as the face, hands, feet, eyes, mouth or genitals.
“The main form of protection is to avoid direct contact with infected people. Bearing in mind that the main form of transmission occurs through skin-to-skin, personal contact, or obviously through contact with personal objects of a patient who is infected with monkeypox”, says Arnaldo Medeiros, secretary of Health Surveillance at the Ministry of Health.
